Master the STAR Method for UK Interviews

By iRemotly Remote Career Team

What Is the STAR Method?

The STAR method is a structured technique for answering behavioural and competency-based interview questions. It stands for Situation, Task, Action, Result — and it's the gold standard used by UK recruiters.

Breaking Down STAR

  • Situation: Set the scene. Describe the context and background of the scenario.
  • Task: Explain your specific responsibility or the challenge you faced.
  • Action: Detail the specific steps YOU took. Use "I" not "we" to show your personal contribution.
  • Result: Share the outcome. Quantify it wherever possible (e.g., "increased sales by 25%", "reduced processing time by 40%").

Example STAR Answer

"In my previous role as a Marketing Coordinator (Situation), I was tasked with improving our email campaign open rates which had dropped to 12% (Task). I conducted A/B testing on subject lines, segmented our mailing list by engagement level, and redesigned the email template for mobile (Action). Within 3 months, our open rates increased to 28% and click-through rates doubled (Result)."

When to Use STAR

Use STAR whenever you hear questions starting with: "Tell me about a time when...", "Give me an example of...", "Describe a situation where...", or "How did you handle...".
